Mammoth Mountain – Abandoned Mine

On my epic trip through the eastern sierra a real highlight was an old mining town and spectacular views of the area. I forgot my camera the first time and just had to hike it again for you all.

Here is some history on the mine, click on the picture for a larger version

p1120726

I camped by a rushing creek

p1120727

It was quite nice at the end of a long summer drought

p1120728

This was a calmer stretch

p1120729

I headed up the trail from the campground to explore

p1120732

And what a surprise! I usually know all about the places I visit beforehand but this was way more interesting than expected

p1120733

These very old buildings are in a state of slow decay, they used to house workers, shops and offices

p1120734

Some have succumbed to the elements, it snows quite a bit here

p1120736

Looks like it is doing pretty well

p1120737

But the back side shows it isn’t long for this world

p1120738

Onward and upward

p1120742

What is that up beyond the trees?

p1120743

Engines, not sure what these did but likely just mining equipment too heavy to haul off

p1120744

Perhaps water pipes

p1120745

More engines

p1120746

Adits are mine access shafts dug into the sides of mountains, more up

p1120747

Here is the mine entrance

p1120769

But all sealed off

p1120771

Beyond the gate is an endless series of tunnels

p1120773

Here is the south flank of the volcano Mammoth Mountain

p1120796

This is the red, mineralized earth they were mining

p1120797

Ski slopes are on the north face, so this is just natural mountain

p1120798

The views were expansive up here and well worth the climb

p1120799

Minaret peaks in the distance, I’ll be down in that valley later on

p1120849

A closer granite peak

p1120850

This is a bowl of mountains around the lake and creeks I camped at

p1120852

With enormous cliffs and spires

p1120853

A granite dome crops out of the bowl here

p1120855

Great views

p1120856

The few aspen groves were just starting to peak out with some vivid color

p1120865

A few more

p1120866

Next up is the lakes of the mammoth basin and perhaps a meadow too.
